Jermel Shim was born in Jamaica and educated at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada where he graduated in 1979 with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. He also holds a post-baccalaureate certificate in information systems from Virginia Commonwealth University.
After his graduation from Queen’s University, Jermel moved with his family to the US. His engineering career spans 29 years, with experience in an architectural engineering firm in Reading, Pennsylvania and an electric utility company in Richmond, Virginia.
Following his retirement in 2010, Jermel completed his first book based on his extensive personal experiences with discrimination in the workplace. During a period of four years, he published four books on topics related to race and politics. Listed below are his published books:
Jermel credits his ability to endure the rigorous discipline of writing to his career as an engineer. His ability to write about political and social problems like racism comes from his interest and self-study in the psychology of human behavior, personal experiences, being raised in the diverse culture of Jamaica, living in two predominantly white countries (Canada and the U.S.), and his family background. His strong interest in these areas was nurtured in his early childhood.
As an author, Jermel’s goal is not just to write about problems that affect society, but also to find solutions for these problems. His blog articles and published books reflect this desire.
